What can happen if you stop taking plaquenil

Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) belongs to a group of medicines called quinolines. Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito.

I was told I didn't have to taper it like prednisone, and that I shouldn't expect any rebound type of reaction like you get when your body adjusts to being off pred. But everyone is taking a different mix of drugs and maybe you're taking something I don't that would make your doctor's recommendation for you different. It happens with both doses. The other one has to do with "ringing" in the ears. I had started with some tinnitus before the medication but have noticed it is worse in the last 3 or 4 weeks. "Can you stop Plaquenil cold turkey" answer - YES. My rheumy told me to take time out on it for a month once. I was put on Plaquenil for RA as I was being dx for lupus. I am very mild. My rhuemy wants me to stop every time I have an infection. When it is gone she said I can resume at my own pace. Take into consideration I only take Plaquenil and ibuprofen 800mg. My symptoms came back after two weeks of being off it.

This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up. Aug 28, 2012 Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine takes a long time to get out of the system - up to 18 months. Be certain you and your physician agree you should discontinue it. Plaquenil substitute - Things You Didn’t Know Nothing safer Plaquenil is also known as hydroxychloroquine, so the parent drug Chloroquine can be substituted. But Chloroquine has significantly higher rate of retinal toxicity, so it isn't used much anymore. Also, Plaquenil appears to effectively reduce flares in patients with lupus not necessarily by suppressing immunity.
