Alternative to plaquenil that doesn't harm eyes

Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

My mom, however, took Plaquenil for an autoimmune disorder and she did lose her vision from it and it is NOT reversible. She now has a very hard time seeing color or even seeing words all the way across a page. Unfortunately, her doctor did not have her do the field of vision tests so by the time they realized she had damage it was too late. However rheumy says plaquenil does not target the specific symptoms of dry eyes and dry mouth. She is right. I treat my dry eyes with restasis drops and the dry mouth comes and goes. Dec 29, 2004 i to have been taking plaquenil for at least 6 to 8 months not sure a lil lupie lol anyway and i do feel a difference in my eyes plus my liver enzymes are up i believe that the highest is 47 and mines is 48 the doc says not dangerously high but we need to keep an eye on it. im not sure but i thought that the enzymes were up cuz of the prednisone but now ill have to ask the doc. i too want.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

  4. Retinal damage from Plaquenil is extremely rare when doses do not exceed the maximum recommended which is about 3 mgs per lb/ 6.5 mgs per kilo of IDEAL body weight and when the patient has no liver or kidney problems. Since doses are cumulative the risk increases with time - 10 years is usually quoted.

Is there a drug that I can take to replace plaquenil. there are several drugs now that you can take instead of the plaquenil. these type of drugs they have now work in a different way then the methotrexate and plaquenil. most of these drugs you will still take the methotrexate. i researched these drugs before i made my decision and so for. Also known as Plaquenil, Quineprox. The following information is NOT intended to endorse drugs or recommend therapy. While these reviews might be helpful, they are not a substitute for the expertise, skill, knowledge and judgement of healthcare practitioners in patient care. Good question. Back on nov 5 i think it was i felt there was a really good discussion about hydroxychlorouine & eye tests here. One of us posted detailed info about her experience & the different types of eye test anyone on plaquenil etc would probably be best to have, and the frequency.
